This one sounds vaguely familiar - did I post this already? - but something called Beer Connoisseur magazine, “the vanguard magazine for the elite epicurean of beer,” is advertising its imminent arrival on Facebook.
Apparently based in Atlanta, it’ll be national in focus. The web site doesn’t reveal much (although the meta tag copy is kind of ridiculous). Poke around a bit andyou’ll find your way in to see its beta test.

It looks like Legacy Brewing of Reading has dodged the bullet.
The brewery, which produces both the Legacy line of craft beers plus Reading Premium, had gone through some rocky months earlier this year had had actually ceased brewing for a few weeks. Founder/brewer Scott Baver left (he’s now at the Lion) and president Dave Gemmel was hunting for some new financial backing. It was so shaky, the brewery didn’t even bother to send beer or reps down to any events during Philly Beer Week.
Oddly, it was Legacy’s design firm – Ruckus Marketing of New York and Moorestown, N.J. – that stepped in and helped save the day.
According to the firm’s Josh Wood, Ruckus helped track down some “bridge financing” so that Legacy could re-start brewing. Wood declined to name the source of those funds or the amount. He said there were enough pre-orders to guarantee the brewery’s survival.
Wood also said:
- Legacy will begin contract-brewing many of its products at the Lion. Only its 22-ounce bottles are certain to be brewed in Reading; the majority of its other products will be produced in Wilkes-Barre.
- No more canned Reading Premium, just bottles and draft. Those popular cans were produced up at High Falls in New York; the Lion doesn’t have a canning line.
- In addition to Reading Premium, Legacy will focus on five brands: Hedonism, Midnight Wit, Hoptimus Prime, Euphoria and Fat Boy. (I guess that means Nor’easter oatmeal stout will bite the dust, unless it’s brewed as a seasonal.)
- Legacy will send two reps to Philly and 4 to N.Y.C.
“They hit a bump in the road,” Wood said. “But we’re definitely not going to be one of those sob stories.”

I had no idea fizzy yellow Mexican water was so expensive.
Whatever, CBS-3 offered a few ideas for saving money on beer last night after NC crushed the Spartans. They even let Joe Sixpack have the final word: You get what you pay for.
Watch it here.

Jack Curtin mentioned last week the arrival of Philly Beer Scene. I don’t have much more on it other than to confirm it’s real and they’ll be throwing a pre- and post-party at Manny Brown’s/Neshaminy Mall in conjunction with the screening of Beer Wars on April 16th.y
Scott Wiley, the manager at the aforesaid Manny Brown’s (probably the best shopping mall beer selection in the vicinity), is the publisher. He reports the first issue will be June 6. Though it’ll have a $20 yearly subscription (6 issues), you’ll also find it free in select bars and restaurants.
I don’t know the other folks involved, but they include Neil Harner, a local web designer (BrewStudio) who I just noticed will be one of the speakers at this month’s CraftBrewers Conference. Also Mat Falco and John Galster.
No word on the identity of the babe on what I’m guessing is a snowplow. She’s eye candy in the magazine’s media kit.

P.J. Whelihan’s, which always had an OK selection, is upgrading things at a new location in South Jersey, The Pour House, “A Better Beer Bar.” Located at 124 N. Haddon Ave., in Westmont, it’s just up the road from two other decent stops, the Taproom & Grille and Cork.
I haven’t stopped in, yet, but the tap lineup is looking good. Avery New World Porter, Dogfish Head Aprihop, Weyerbacher Insanity, Otter Creek Russian Imperial Stout, Saison Dupont, among others. The bottle list is pretty substantial, with about 50 bottles, including Stone Cali-Belgique, DFH Fort, Green Flash La Freak, Westmalle Tripel, Troegs Flying Mouflan…
The food is basic pubfare - sandwiches, salads, burgers, appys.
